I have such creative friends!

Just look at some of their work and be inspired – as I am, constantly.

Here’s a library bag that Gail just whipped up for her little granddaughter.

Pleased with the lion applique  (as she ought to be) Gail has prepped a cute black and white cow for another project.  I think it’s to be a surprise …IMG_7784

Speaking of surprises, this nautical (but nice!) quilt is a gift for someone special too. Di B brought it along to Paddington Quilters for some advice about borders and binding.  Though the dark carpet doesn’t help show this quilt to its best advantage, it’s going to be just stunning, with royal blue borders and a jaunty red and white striped binding.

Sue’s been embroidering delicate orange flowers on diamonds for a few weeks, and she finally brought along the (almost) finished product – a pincushion by Sue Daley of Patchwork with Busyfingers.

IMG_7867  IMG_7866  For now, I’ll finish by showing you Diane’s whimsical applique quilt (I don’t know who the designer is) with ducks that manage to look appealing even before Diane’s added their eyes!IMG_7777 What am I doing? My steady progress on a couple of longstanding projects looks to be paying off at last and I might have a finish or two (and a finished quilt top) to show you before long.

Patience, patience… :-)

St Mark’s Quilters

Last year my friend Gillian was kind enough to donate a huge bag of beautiful new flannel fabrics for our quilts for the KU Marcia Burgess Autism Specific Early Learning & Care Centre.IMG_7706 They’re soft and comforting for the children, but Di B and I thought it best to wait until our quilters had a little more experience in handling conventional cotton quilting fabrics before introducing flannel.

After finding a superbly simple pattern for a raggy quilt-as-you-go quilt, we decided these fabrics would be perfect, and this month’s St Mark’s Quilters workshop saw us cutting up 6 1/2 inch squares and helping our keen quilters to quilt the individual blocks and then piece them together leaving raggy edges to be snipped.

Decisions, decisions … here’s Di C taking great care to co-ordinate her colours.IMG_7703

Michaela, always happy to try something new, quilted lots of blocks on her machine, ready to join them up at home.

IMG_7702 Lots of cutting from my end of the table resulted in this stack of homework. Hmmmm…. must get stitching….

IMG_7708

Di B did some nifty fussy cutting resulting in these cute squares.IMG_7707 Just look at the result – a quilt to be well and truly snuggled into!Fussy Cut Quilt as you go Raggy Quilt Sept 2010 002 After snipping the seams she popped the quilt in a bag, tied it up and washed it in the machine. Then she tumble dried it, still in the bag.Fussy Cut Quilt as you go Raggy Quilt Sept 2010 003She advises that the bag is absolutely necessary if one is to avoid clogging up the works, or being asphyxiated from all the fluff that’s released in the  process!Fussy Cut Quilt as you go Raggy Quilt Sept 2010 001

There you are!

…waiting patiently for a word from me. Aren’t you kind! Thank you for not giving up, as once again life has intruded on my blogging time.

I’ll bring you up to date over the next few days, but first I must show you the latest three quilts Moo’s made for the little ones at the KU Marcia Burgess kindy.IMG_7698

The Sydney Olympics - Was it really 10 years ago?

The Opening Ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games took place on 15th September 2000, and I was fortunate enough to be invited.

It was a wonderful time to be living here in Sydney.  Complete strangers even laughed and struck up conversations on the trains and buses.  It was as if we were all at the same big party!

Some of our friends left town, determined to avoid all the fuss, but many months earlier I had made up my mind that I wanted to be part of the fun as an official volunteer.

Allocated to Protocol, I spent the weeks leading up to the Games at the airport meeting and greeting athletes and officials. Here I am with some of my fellow volunteers, just before the big parade through the city streets afterwards, where we were cheered and clapped for our efforts as “the best volunteers ever” (to quote Juan Antonio Samaranch).

I even went to a post-Olympics celebration where Susie O’Neill (“Madam Butterfly”) let me try on her gold medal.Top-2.bmp
So many changes since then…. My hair is whiter, my face a little more ‘lived in' - and look at that HUGE mobile phone clipped to my belt!

She's a winner!

To 24 Stitchin' Mission 'graduates' here at St Mark's, Darling Point, Linda has always been a winner, with her gift for guiding beginners through the basics of quiltmaking, and the natural way she shares her faith as she goes.

Now it's official!  Linda's Stitchin' Mission attracted a record 2519 votes in the Iowa Dream Big Grow Here contest and she's won $1000!

With this money she plans to produce a DVD and a manual of her complete 5 lesson beginner quiltmaking course so that Stitchin' Mission can spread beyond the limits of where she can travel.  Soon quilters worldwide will be able to pop in the DVD and learn from Linda.

That's wonderful news for us here in Australia where so many of my quilting friends are waiting to make the picture below (from the final day of St Mark's Stitchin' Mission last year) a reality at their churches.

Congratulations Linda - and a huge 'thank you' to everyone who voted.  You're the best!

..and more beading!

This time the clever crafty person is my friend, Di, who made this delicate hydrangea wallhanging to match the birthday quilt she made for her mum, Margaret.

Fancy machine quilting and some strategically placed beads make it something rather special, don't you think?

But wait, there's more!  Di combined some hydrangea leftovers with sunshine yellow florals to make a cover for Margaret's Kindle.  That girl's such an over-achiever :-))

Beautiful beadwork

Look at this gorgeous bookmark my very clever daughter Sarah made for her BFF who left yesterday to work in Africa for a year.IMG_7634 She used a graph from a cross-stitch pattern and wove the tiny beads on a loom to create this wonderful image of the tiger drinking at a waterhole.

IMG_7638 Yes, yes, we all know there are no tigers in Africa, but these two girls are complete and utter animal-lovers (they’ve both completed PhDs in Vet Science) and Sarah in particular is crazy about tigers!imageimage-2 IMG_7635
