Kaffe Fassett Quilt finished

After more than a year of quietly plodding away at this quilt (wearing sunglasses, of course) as I tackled more challenging quilts in the meantime, I finally finished Kaffe Fassett's Ohio Star quilt (featured on the cover of his gorgeous "Kaleidoscope of Quilts") in time for my dear MIL's 81st birthday. Fortunately she didn't know it was in the pipeline., and was absolutely taken by surprise when I gave it to her on her birthday this year.

Although the fabrics I used in this lively quilt were very much out of my comfort zone, I loved the process of creating a quilt for my DMIL's 80th birthday - just a year late!

She is such a generous and flamboyant personality, and so her special quilt dictated that Kaffe Fassett fabrics must be used. A visit to Liberty in Regent Street in London in 2005 provided many of the fabrics, chosen personally for me on that morning by Kaffe Fassett himself.

A dear friend had given me a scrap bag of fabrics inherited from her mother from the '60s, and these gave me the necessary fillers to finish off this vibrant quilt.

Do you ever make a quilt that you start out feeling quite cool about - and then grow to love the result?

  1. Fabulous! I love the bright colours, and I imagine your DMIL will too.
Kaffe Fassett himself, no less! How special is that?! A famous celebrity choosing for another famous celebrity. Perfect.

  2. It's just lovely, Di. I am working (struggling really) on a quilt that uses some Kaffe's at the moment. I love the fabrics, but I certainly find them challenging to use.
