Gifted

How blessed am I? I've been spoiled with some pretty special gifts recently.

My friend Di B recently surprised me with this cute Edith Bag she made from pretend selvedge fabric. She knows what a selvedge 'tragic' I am😊

It was designed by Edith Bieri of QuiltsUndMehr and you can find a tutorial to make your own here on Linda Hungerford's blog

I love 'just because' gifts. Especially when they're as pretty as this. Thank you, Di.

Not a personal gift, but a couple of months ago Anorina, Samelia's Mum offered to give these pretty little items on Facebook to the first Follower who could identify what they were. Can you guess?

Yes, they're holders for grasping hot saucepan handles! I guessed correctly, and I now these humble little items grace my kitchen bench and make me smile me every day. Thank you, Anorina, I love Flower Sugar 😊

Most recently my young friend, artist Jo Chew, ink-painted this amazing picture of my darling Chester and gave it to me the week he turned 5.

She's totally captured his shiny black coat in this typical Chester pose, and I'm as much in love with her exquisite painting as I am with the real Chester. Thank you, Jo.

Finally, I was just a bit excited when our local real estate agents, Martin Property, approached me a few weeks ago and asked if they could feature me in our neighborhood magazine as Local of the Month for July.

It took me a whole nanosecond to think about it!

I've never been called a 'superstar' before, but I could get used to itπŸ˜„.

I am indeed a passionate 'Zetlander'. Every day is a gift living here, and I'm so grateful to God that Chester and I are part of such a friendly neighborhood.

Lindi made my day, and a scarf

Recently Lindi sent me a special gift in the mail, a strippy patchwork scarf that she had made for me in my very favourite colours! It’s about 8 inches wide and 6 feet long, and backed with snuggly flannelette. I can’t wait to wear it next winter because it will match simply everything in my wardrobeBe right back and make me feel very loved.

IMG_5929_thumb[4]

She also included some of my favourite chocolates (for ‘medicinal’ purposes, of course) and a little something for young Chester. How thoughtful! Lindi’s just that kind of gal.

IMG_5928_thumb[3]

Thank you, dear Lindi!

It wasn’t my birthday (though it is today Winking smile), and I had done nothing to deserve my presents.

It was a Pay it Forward gift, and came with certain conditions.

So here’s how Pay it Forward works……

In gratitude for Lindi’s kindness I’m passing on the goodness and offering to make 5 people a handmade gift.

I’m allowed a year in which to make these gifts.

If you’d like to be on the receiving end all you need to do is leave me a comment here on my blog letting me know.

Please include your email address if you’re a “No reply” blogger as I must have some way of getting back to you to confirm if you’re one of the lucky five. Don’t worry, your comments will go directly to my inbox and I won’t be publishing comments for this post, so your private details will remain with me.

However… you must be prepared to Pay it Forward once you receive your gift.

You should, in turn, offer (through your blog or on Facebook) to make 5 people a handmade gift over the next year. Please don’t put your hand up unless you are prepared to make the time to do this.

I am happy to post overseas too.

So, wave your hand if you’re up for it Rolling on the floor laughing

Sunshine

It’s no secret that the last 10 months have been the hardest in my life. Even now there are moments when I wonder if I’ll wake up and find it’s all just been a very bad dream.

IMG_4490

I’ve been blessed with the most loving, caring and generous family and friends who’ve stood by me even when I’ve been a proper misery-guts and not fun to be around. And God has patiently held me close while I’ve kept on asking “Why?”.

The future is still unclear, but I’m more confident than ever that God has a plan for me, even if I’m unimpressed with his timing.

The last few weeks have brought some welcome sunshine in my life. It began with my Daisy a Day quilt being chosen as one of the three Viewers’ Choice winners in Amy’s Bloggers’ Quilt Festival.

IMG_8995

When sponsor Vicki Welsh asked me which stash pack I’d like as part of my prize I chose her “Sunshine” pack because I love what a touch of yellow does for my quilts. Vicki sells the prettiest hand-dyed fabrics in her Etsy shop.

Sunshine1

These delicious fabrics and Mistyfuse will be wonderful for my newly-begun hand applique project! Thank you so much, Vicki.

Sunshine2

A few weeks later I won a local photographic competition with this photo, taken on a gloriously sunny Australia Day in January this year. I’m so excited about my prize, a course in camera craft at the Australian Centre for Photography. I really need this – but first I need to buy a DSLR camera.

RPEYC3

Then a quick entry in Good Reading Magazine’s giveaway on Facebook won me a copy of this thriller. I can’t wait for it to arrive.

My next little grandbaby, due in September, continues to thrive.

IMG_3955

Best of all, I might soon have a new home where I will wake every morning to this expansive, green view. Hope I can tell you more soon!

Life is gradually looking up and becoming sunnier.

Today “It’s All About Me”!

It’s the first day of what promises to be a hilarious blog hop, Madame Samm’s latest, with the delightful Marlene as our cheerleader.
Madame Samm’s sent our jolly band of bloggers an Amy Bradley applique pattern of a …(ahem)…’traditionally-built’ woman, with instructions to make it something of a self-portrait. I think we’re all in for a chuckle-filled week!
So here I go, diving in at the deep end, with not a soul to copy model my blog post on. (Deep breaths…)
buttonbiased4
Let me tell you (not exactly all) about me…
So the first thing is that I find new experiences such as this extremely daunting. My heart’s been racing as the deadline approached and I wondered whether I was going to have my little project finished in time for the great reveal. But, as usual, the anticipation was far worse than the reality.
Taa daa!!!IMG_0796
I have grey hair. I used to be ‘blonde’, but who was I kidding? One day I decided I’d rather grow old disgracefully while just being myself. Life’s too short for root touch-ups!IMG_0782
My favourite colour is PINK. Bright, fuchsia, lollypop, shocking in-your-face PINK. Actually any shade will do, just as long as it’s PINK.
IMG_0803

I LOVE my red spectacle frames. They have the teensiest bit of blinginess. In fact I love them so much that when I needed to get new spectacles recently and my old frames were a little knocked about and scratched with age (a bit like me, really) I just bought a new version of my same old frames. How boring is that? The only thing that would make me love my frames better would be if they were PINK!
IMG_0783
I’d rather hand stitch my applique than attempt to keep to the lines as I feed it through a machine, so I worked all of this quirky Amy Bradley design by hand, apart from the borders. Of course I had my pins close at hand on my wrist, and Amy’s lovely clear instructions.
IMG_0784
For the first time I learnt, in Amy’s easy steps, how to fuse a second layer of white fabric onto the back of light coloured fabrics where patterns and threads might show through. IMG_0795
“Imagine FUTURE you”, said Madame Samm when she introduced this blog hop, but the thought of developing hind fat quarters like this Brunhilda is frankly scary. There was a heck of a lot of woman for me to outline-quilt around!
One thing about me that I doubt will ever change is my weakness for a certain family of techy toys.
IMG_0781I listen to audiobooks on my iPhone as I stitch, and snap and edit photos on it using cute apps that can create amazing effects. Then I post them on here as part of a Photo a Day Challenge. I keep in touch with friends, family and blogging buddies across the world by playing Words With Friends on my iPad. The music on my iPod  keeps me company too, and recently my joy was complete when I acquired an iMac.
IMG_0785
I even had a special case made for my iPhone from a photo of my Daisy a Day quilt.
IMG_0800
When it comes to products prefixed by that dear little “i” I just can’t get enough. You might say I’m a little biased!
Not too keen on the iRon though Winking smile.
* * * * *
How about a little giveaway? Just leave me a comment on this post to be in the draw for these goodies…
IMG_0809
A pair of quilter’s socks (PINK, of course!) and a little extra help with becoming FUTURE you – a bar of mud soap with minerals from the Dead Sea (I bought it on our pilgrimage to Israel last year).
For a second chance, become a Follower of my blog, then tell me you’ve done this (or tell me you already are a Follower) in a separate comment. Please be sure you’re not Anonymous or a no-reply blogger. I’d be sad if you won and I couldn’t reach you.
I’ll close comments on Friday 1st March and draw the winner.

Would you like to see how today’s nine other bloggers have created their self-portraits in fabric? Madame Samm has prizes for visiting all the blogs taking part in the It’s All About Me Blog Hop, around ten blogs each day, and for leaving lots of encouraging comments.
Enjoy!

Daisy a Day is done, and I’m celebrating with a GIVEAWAY!!!

Call it what you will – Daisy a Day, Joseph’s Coat, Tea Leaves, Lafayette Orange Peel or Lover’s Knot - I really, REALLY love this quilt, which is just as well because I’ve spent more than 18 months piecing and quilting it entirely by hand.
IMG_9002
Months ago I promised you a look at the three queen sized quilts I finally finished in July. You’ve seen my Whirligig Quilt, then Ben’s and Sunny’s Wedding Quilt, and now (drumroll……..) here’s my favourite, Daisy a Day.
You can read here how some of my friends and I came to be making this quilt. Robbie’s version became a cot quilt, Jill’s is an elegant runner across the foot of her bed, and Gail is currently on the home stretch, hand quilting her QS version made from delicate Liberty fabrics.
IMG_8993
I love scrappy quilts, the more fabrics the better, so choosing colours for my petals was a snap. I simply dived into my humungous scrap pile(s) and chose the prettiest and happiest pieces I could find. Then I teamed them together with white-on-white polka dot filler shapes to make them “pop”.
IMG_8998
Ardco metal templates (the 12 inch size) made cutting the shapes easy, though getting all six petals to meet nicely at the centre of each circle, with no gaps, proved a tad challenging at times. I’m glad I didn’t let it stress me too much because looking at the finished quilt I think you’d need a search party to find those wonky joins now.
IMG_8996-001
A wise friend advised me to machine quilt this monster. After all, I do lead a busy life. But after seeing Robbie’s cot-sized version, meticulously hand-quilted and cuddly, I threw caution to the winds and decided to hand quilt mine too.
I feared my wise counselor might think I’d lost my marbles and many would agree, so I kept this a secret!
IMG_9001
On Easter Saturday this year I spent the afternoon crawling around on my hands and knees on my bedroom floor, sandwiching and pinning the quilt to within an inch of its life.
Why pin, and not baste, as is more usual for hand quilting? Aha, I had a cunning plan Smile
Placing a safety pin in every white space across the quilt, and counting them in as I pinned, meant I could easily keep track of my progress. By counting the pins out as I quilted each of these negative spaces I didn’t accidentally miss a space, and I marked them off on a card, one by one.
IMG_9684
It was very simple to remove any pins that got in the way of my quilting hoop as I went.
I was surprised and delighted to find that the whole quilt only took me 5 weeks to quilt. I guess quilting for a couple of hours each night in front of the TV, as well as whenever I attended one of my quilting groups, added up quickly.
IMG_9025
The binding colour was a no-brainer! There are so many gorgeous colours in this quilt, but somehow the bright pinks called to me the loudest Smile. No surprises there.
IMG_9026
If this block design is making your heart go pitty-pat, then I think you’ll want to enter my GIVEAWAY to win one of three prizes generously donated by JoNell at QUILTSMITH Ltd (the business in Virginia, USA, not the shop by the same name in Sydney, Australia).
To be in the running, just pop over to the Ardco Templates by Quiltsmith website and look through all the wonderful sizes and shapes available for your piecing pleasure. Then come back here and leave me a comment telling me your favourite Ardco template shape.
That’s it. No other hoops to jump through (I don’t like them myself), though you’ll make me a very happy blogger if you choose to become a Follower, and I’ll be grinning from ear to ear if you tell your friends about my giveaway on Facebook and Twitter.
*** Please make sure I can contact you by email. I’m afraid I can’t count you in the giveaway if you’re a “No reply” blogger ‘cos I have no way of letting you know when you win!
I’ll close comments at midnight Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time on Sunday 18th November, and I’ll draw three winners soon after.

First Prize is a set of 12 inch Tea Leaves templates (TLW-12) plus a set of 6 inch Tea Leaves templates (TLW-6).
Second Prize is a set of 12 inch Tea Leaves templates (TLW-12).

You’re going to love ARDCO templates!
First of all, they’re metal. Nice and strong, and accurate. Unlike perspex templates, the edges aren’t going to chip or corners break off.
You can get the tip of a mechanical pencil right into those corner slits (and if you can’t, all you need is a teensy rub with the finest grade sandpaper to widen the slits just a smidge).
IMG_0212
See the rough, grainy surface on the underside of the template?
IMG_0209
(This one’s well-worn after tracing all my Daisy a Day pieces!)
When you position this baby on your fabric ready for tracing it’s not going anywhere. Honestly, it grips and makes tracing a breeze, especially if you use a sandpaper board underneath your fabric. No skidding! Smile
Being “window” templates, too, it’s easy to position them so you can fussy cut your fabrics.
Finally, once you’ve traced along both the inside and outside edges of the template you’ll have a nice stitching line, perfect for hand-piecing!
* * *
But wait, there’s more Winking smile
JoNell is offering all my readers a discount of 10% 20% off any templates on the website for 2 weeks (up until Sunday 25th November). Simply enter the discount code JIS78 when you enter your name at the checkout. What are you waiting for?
Just added:
* There is no actual box for entering that discount code at the checkout, but if you simply type it beside your name this will identify you to JoNell as one of my readers, and worthy of special treatment (ie 20% off).
* International shipping, she says, is either at the same price quoted on the website for US shipping, or very little more. After all, these templates don’t weigh much at all.
