An Evening at the Palazzo Normanii [1]

Tonight the members of Societas Liturgica were invited by the President of the Regional Assembly of Sicily, Dr Gianfranco Micciche, to the Palazzo Normanii (Palace of the Normans), sometimes called the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace).

On our arrival we were shown through the medieval Cappella Palatino (see above for outside photo) built by the Norman King Roger, a small chapel but with walls lined in golden embellished mosaics. Like so many churches here, it's a little over the top, but quite exquisite at the same time. Unfortunately it's under restoration, so much of the best bits were covered, but the mosaics that we could see, as well as the simple lines of the Norman ceiling, were magnificent.
