Don’t you love Sue’s sashiko embroidery!
Another Paddington Patchworker, Sue Rowles, is a big fan of Bonnie K Hunter’s stashbuster quilts. I love them too but I’m ashamed to admit my “Double Delight” is still in several hundred pieces in a box in the corner!
Sue entered her eye-catching finished version of Bonnie’s “Orca Bay” Mystery Quilt.
My friend, Linda Billett of Artisan Quilting took a few weeks off quilting other people’s quilts over the Christmas holidays to have a little quilting fun of her own, and “Randomly Ruffling Your Feathers!” was the result.
At first glance it seems a perfectly demure, exquisitely quilted braid quilt.
But look a little closer! Can you see the butterfly?
And the rabbit, the bird and the dragonfly?
I enjoyed spotting these whimsies among the feathers, but my favourite was Linda’s own dog, Cleo, looking like a hunting dog from a mediaeval tapestry.
At St Mark’s Quilters we’ve made quite a few quilt-as-you-go string quilts, so Di B, Sue and I were immediately attracted to Meg Orr’s “Just a Touch of Autumn”, and we were delighted when Meg herself, white-gloving nearby, explained her creative process. Look at the half-square triangles in each block – a very effective way to use a large-scale print you can’t bring yourself to cut up.
Finally let me show you Lisa Walton’s “Blue Corridor”, a majestic and ethereal quilt inspired by the parabolic arches of the corridor in Gaudi’s Casa Batllo in Barcelona.

It was indeed a great show. I was so tired when I finally reached the quilts (at 3.30, having been there since 10am) that I didn't notice the detail in most of them but I did love the braided quilt and "Just a Touch of Autumn". I took photos of those to give me inspiration later.
ReplyDeleteThanks Di, Rachel and I went to the show with Eddie and Eleanor so we missed out on some of the quilts on display. It was 4 of us going to the show or no visit so we did well I thought. It is very nice to see some of them and read the extra information. Eddie had Rachel's phone with a favourite app and Eleanor slept a while so they did well too considering, Bronwen C

am getting somewhat blind.
Am sorting out my 'den of iniquity' otherwise the study/sewing room...the chaos usually reminds me of the den....
But I found the pieces you kindly sent me years ago and also found what I had done on that piece of work. Somehow the two had not yet met. No excuses now.

ReplyDeleteIt was wonderful to see you again at the awards ceremony after a couple years. Lucy still has the hearts quilt from her transplant about nine years ago. I felt this year there were so many quilts for everyone's taste. There were so many amazing quilts. Cheers Kerry
It's great to see all these beautiful quilts again! I really loved the quilting on the braid quilt but I didn't notice the hunting dog so thank you for showing us.
